Music is integrated throughout the curriculum. It is used to enhance other artistic and academic work e.g. to gain cultural competency children learn about a variety of instruments, as well as different musical styles and ways to move.
| Children in Grades 3 to 5 will learn to: |
| Be introduced to various music and movement performances | Explore diverse expressions of rhythm and melody through song, movement and the use of instruments |
| Develop a more analytical appreciation of music and become more proficient musicians able to evaluate, select and perform simple musical works | Be able to sing in tune using proper posture, diction, breathing and expression |

Musical Expression Exploring diverse expressions of music by attending a variety of musical performances in the area. They become familiar with the various musical genres by sharing and listening to many different forms from musical theatre to a symphony performance and opera |
Creating Music Our children explore creating music; writing their own lyrics to familiar tunes and writing their own songs. The children use simple tunes and have fun converting them to multiple musical styles |

Practice & Performance The children develop their musical abilities through vocal expression. They will practice, perform and record various songs as part of a larger group and with solos; Our children have opportunities to sing for Folk Life, Learning Celebrations, Drama performances as well as visiting a recording studio and creating a CD of songs that they have chosen |
Exhibiting Work The children develop their musical abilities by playing a variety of instruments. They become familiar with un-pitched percussion instruments for example rattles, tambourines and a variety of drums. The children will further develop their musical skills by learning to play a pitched instrument such as a guitar, marimba, or recorder |
