Social Studies

Children in Grades K to 2 will learn to:
Develop an understanding of the dynamics of community from a study of their classroom, families, and neighborhoods Be able to recognize the similarities and differences between people Begin to understand the concept of historical time and its relationship to the present
By using these techniques:

Experiential Learning

Engaging in projects, fieldtrips, interviews, research and real life experiences the children to explore, compare and contrast various families and groups of people

Cultural Studies

Studying different groups of people and traditions, such as Native American cultures, the children will begin to identify various cultural practices and identify their own cultural practices

 

Children in Grades 3 to 5 will learn to:
Deepen their understanding of the relationships between people, environment and culture Explore relevant social concepts by engaging in a series of studies - beginning with a study of self, moving to family, community, state, nation, and culminating in an exploration of global cultures Expand their understanding of historical time and its relationship to the present
By using these techniques:

Project-based Learning

Using project based learning the stories of our world come alive through literature, drama, dance, music and art. Our children acquire real life experiences through local field trips, research projects, interviews, and involvement in community activities

Curiosity

I Wonder, I Explore, I Discover!

Examining oneself and family, and expand to school and community. The students will explore social concepts of self and the diversity and similarities of other people and cultures

Connections

Courage, Conflict, Choices;

Engaging in leadership, collaboration and decision making to explore current and historical leaders, situations and events

Compassion

Stewardship, Empathy, Responsibility;

Putting leadership into action. This study connects with our service learning projects and our social and environmental stewardship
