Creative Writing Process Using journals, diaries, and daily writing folders the children practice writing personal narratives, poems, fiction, and nonfiction books. We nurture children’s self expression and the enthusiasm generated by the creative writing process |
Writer's Workshop Using a writer’s workshop children engage in writing something new that didn’t exist before. They revise, edit and publish books that reflect their interests and knowledge |
| Children in Grades 3 to 5 will learn to: |
| Develop a deep appreciation of written language as one of the foundations for all communication and a tool of cultural expression | Understand and increase their knowledge of the basic conventions of the written language; spelling, and grammar, as well as expand their written vocabulary | Revise and edit their writing and help others in the revision and editing process |
| By using these techniques: |

Types of Writing Focusing on the six primary characteristics of writing (ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence structure, and conventions), our students become more adept at independently evaluating and revising their own writing, and become more skilled at giving helpful peer feedback |
Thematic Practice Children explore a variety of creative writing formats and styles by composing stories, personal narratives, works of fiction, thank you cards, poems, letters, journals, blogs, nonfiction pamphlets and books, letters, testimonials, instructions and other informational texts |

Communication Skills Demonstrating that writing is a primary communication method to share ideas, opinions and thinking with the world |
Personal Voice Since writing is authentic and relevant the children are able to develop a stronger personal voice and establish a clear setting (time and place). Students are encouraged to develop multi-faceted characters are developed through purposeful detail and rich dialogue |
