How We Co-op

Co-op is one of the best parts of KapKa

One of a handful of cooperative elementary schools in the U.S.

KapKa is proud to carry a tradition of cooperative education that stretches back to the early 1900s. Our co-op model enhances the incredible education students receive from our teachers while fostering a vibrant, connected community—and it helps us keep tuition accessible for families.

We didn’t specifically search for a co-op, but have been so happy with KapKa and surprised by how manageable and fun the co-op hours have been.
— Rachel & Damon, 1st Grade Parents

A modern co-op

At KapKa, co-op participation is meaningful, flexible, and designed to fit the realities of today’s families. Each year, we work with you to find the right co-op role for your family, matching your skills, interests, and availability with the school’s needs.

  • We take time to collaborate with you and learn about your schedule, interests, and superpowers - and how these can help our cooperative.

Your family’s co-op schedule might involve one or more of these options:

    • A daytime shift, anywhere from 1-3hrs a week

    • Evenings or weekends projects / teams

    • Events / trips support

    • Community service (within our school community and in the greater community)

We welcome extended family, and family friends to join your co-op team as well.

  • Your family will select a co-op commitment level (a set amount of hours for the school year) that works for you. We offer three commitment levels. Lower time commitment levels are paired with a financial contribution, ensuring fairness while valuing each family’s support. Co-op hours include everything from organizing a meal train, supporting small literacy groups, or helping behind the scenes with projects and events.

95% of our families choose the highest time commitment level, finding meaning and connection in the ways they support KapKa and the community.

  • Families consistently tell us that participating in the cooperative comes back to them ten-fold. Whether it’s getting to know your child’s classroom experience firsthand, forming strong connections with other families, learning new skills, or building friendships that last well beyond elementary school (for both kids and adults) - the benefits extend far beyond the hours you contribute.

Even with three children and two full‑time jobs, incorporating KapKa into our routine has been surprisingly easy. My husband and I genuinely look forward to our weekly hour-long shift at the school—to spend time with the kids, connect with teachers, and enjoy being outside.
