Mission & Values
Learning should feel alive
Our mission
Our mission shapes our work as a school and as a cooperative community, both for today and for our future.
“Together, we empower passionate learners and creative problem-solvers, rooted in community, to build a more just and sustainable world.”
Our values
These values are centered around our founding principles - respect for self, respect for others, and respect for nature - and rooted in the ethos of kindness and inclusion.
-
Learning is most effective when the baseline is personal connection
We instill in every child the belief that they are capable and responsible leaders and community members - nurturing your child’s self-awareness, confidence, empathy, resilience, and love of learning. Teachers and staff take the time to truly know your child, how they learn, and their unique strengths, needs, and pace of development. Using ongoing observation and evidence-based practices to guide instruction, every student is both supported and appropriately challenged.

Exploration and questions build deeper understanding
Questions are encouraged at KapKa. Classroom experiences are built around meaningful projects, real-world problems, and hands-on experiences that help your student make connections and apply skills in ways that feel relevant and lasting.
Your student will be supported to be curious about themselves as well - with guided self-reflection and critical thinking about what best supports their learning style. And our commitment to device-free classrooms, until their intentional use in fourth and fifth grades, ensures that student engagement with the world around them is direct, active, and creative.
-
We are constantly learning from, and growing in the natural world
Nature is our favorite classroom, playground, and source of inspiration. Your child will spend an uninterrupted hour outside each day (with more time for the younger grades) - including gardens, parks, and forested areas. Hands-on environmental education helps students observe, question, and care for the living world around them. And we turn to nature throughout the year - with special trips that bring us deeper into connection with the earth we live on and with each other.
Through their daily play, guided explorations, and immersive experiences - your child will develop curiosity and critical thinking about the interactions and interconnectedness of humans and nature, and a lifelong respect for the environment.
-
Community is something you practice - strengthened by many perspectives
Combined with our co-op model, KapKa creates a school culture where you and your student will be invited into collaboration with a vibrant community. From students to adults - we share ideas, solve problems together, and support one another’s growth - drawing on a range of perspectives and experiences that deepen learning and often lead to stronger outcomes.
This community practice is a shared investment in the life of the school and the growth of our children. KapKa students, through community modeling, develop empathy, communication skills, and a strong sense of belonging that extends well beyond the classroom.

A strong community is one where everyone feels they belong
At KapKa, we are committed to creating an inclusive and justice-oriented learning environment. Your child will learn to understand themselves and others, recognizing what makes each of us unique while discovering the shared experiences and connections that bring us together.
We actively examine and address inequities - helping students recognize bias and understand how to contribute to a more just and compassionate world. Inclusion at KapKa is not a single lesson or activity - it’s a way of learning and living together that we practice every day, celebrating the full diversity of human experiences and supporting every child in seeing themselves as valued members of the community.
Our values are alive in all we do.
